Farewell to a Friend


Lori Jean Alvestad McPherson, 55, of Big Timber, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011 at the Marias Medical Center in Shelby, due to complications from esophageal cancer. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Friday, November 4, at the Whitted Funeral Chapel in Shelby.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Bob McPherson of Big Timber; mother, Darlene Alvestad of Shelby; sisters, Connie (Ron) Iverson of Ledger, MT, Vicki (Denny) Knickerbocker, and Kathy Huso Alvestad both of Shelby, MT; a brother, Dave (Barbie) Alvestad of Shelby, MT; step-children, Scott (Rita) of Glendive, MT Steve (Amber) of Salt Lake City, Shane (Amber) of Glendive, MT and Garth of Riverton, WY; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved father, Tony Alvestad in 1975.

Lori was born December 20, 1955 to Tony and Darlene (Fisk) Alvestad at Shelby where she was raised and graduated from high school in 1974. She attended the University of Montana majoring in French. She was selected to live in Dijon, France for several months as part of her studies; an experience she truly loved and spoke of often.

Lori loved to entertain and sing. She sang with the Lost Highway Band and the Electric City Jazz Band. Lori always impressed everyone with her beautiful voice. Lori’s most notable music accomplishment was an appearance as the opening act for the legendary BB King at a concert in Missoula.

Her life accomplishments include graduating in the top ten of her class from high school and her lifelong love for her pets, Charlie, Shoogie and Buddy. She also starred in several Montana Theatrical Productions including Hello Dolly, Godspell and Fiddler on the Roof along with many others. She also sang at many events including her nieces’ and nephews’ weddings.

On February 12, 1994, she married Bob McPherson and after several years of living in Montana and Idaho they settled near Big Timber where they lived in a cabin on the Boulder River. Lori, along with her husband, worked as an insurance agent and as a car sales rep.

Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Oasis Animal Shelter, Box 398, Shelby, MT, 59474.
